The Next Frontier For Climate Action

The multi-billion dollar gaming industry’s importance goes beyond culture, social networking and entertainment. Opportunities abound to rally millions of gamers across the world towards sustainability efforts to protect and save planet earth.

Weekly Sparks invites Razer, the leading global lifestyle brand for gamers, to share its insights on the subject of sustainability.

Razer’s Sustainability Manager, Kenneth Ng

Razer’s Sustainability Manager, Kenneth Ng, pens an Open Letter to Gamers to join the next frontier for climate action…

“We often get asked why Razer is so heavily invested in Sustainability and our answer usually is that we are a company of gamers and want to ensure the world remains an arena we can all continue to play in.

I want to take this opportunity to expand on that in an open letter to our wonderful community of gamers. Gamers represent more than 2.3 billion of the world’s population and that makes us a powerful force to be reckoned with. Imagine the impact we can have if we all joined forces to form the next frontier for climate action.

At Razer, we are committed to supporting you on your journey towards sustainability, which we know can be a tricky field to navigate. We understand that for many people, the struggle is not knowing where to even begin. To tackle this challenge, we recently launched our Sneki Snek cartoon series to educate our community about the threats to the planet and the things that we can all do to incorporate more eco-friendly habits into our daily lives. Each episode will introduce you to issues such as deforestation, overfishing, air pollution, upcycling, slash-and-burn farming, and climate change. If you’d like to learn more about sustainability, then I encourage you to go on this journey with Sneki Snek and his friends as it’s a great launching pad to the world of sustainability, and you will also learn about eco-friendly habits to incorporate into your life.

I’m a true believer that knowledge is power, so I’d like to encourage you to always do your research and learn as much as you can about the current issues facing the planet. As you learn more about these issues, I urge you to stay hopeful. I know they may sound so daunting and so ‘big’, but you are a part of the largest and most inclusive community of gamers and together we can, and we will make a difference.

At the end of the day, it’s all about the little decisions you make that will shape the world that you are creating, both for yourself and others. I, like many people, have asked myself, ‘I’m just one person, what difference can I make?’ But I’ve learned that little things can make a huge difference, and I want you to feel empowered with that knowledge. You may be one person, but you’re more powerful than you think. The things that you do everyday matter, so here are some examples of little things that you can do that have a ripple effect and create everlasting change:

  • Reuse plastic bags

  • Opt for e-statements/newsletters

  • Bring your own containers for food

  • Pack your own meals to school/work

  • Use a reusable straw for beverage consumption

  • Bring your own bags for groceries

  • Recycle glass bottles

  • Use recycled toilet paper

  • Start a herb garden

  • Organize/join a community cleanup in your neighborhood

  • Upcycle Razer boxes/packaging

  • Compost food waste for gardening

Whilst doing our bit for Mother Nature is already its own reward, we’re giving even more incentives to go sustainable by rewarding consumers with Razer Silver and Razer swag. Visit Go Green With Razer | Community Program to learn more about our community challenge.

As part of our drive to provide consumers with the opportunity to contribute to the global green movement, we partnered with Conservation International (CI) in October 2020 and introduced our Sneki Snek campaign. Through this collaboration, we called upon our fans to rally behind Sneki Snek, our sustainability mascot, and help him save 100,000 trees. To do so, we released a limited edition Snek Snek eco-merchandise collection and a portion of the sale of each Sneki Snek eco-merchandise goes to supporting CI in its mission to save trees. The Razer community smashed that goal within a few weeks, so we changed our goal to save 1 million trees. We celebrate every 100,000 trees saved with a new Snek Snek eco-merchandise capsule collection, giving our fans even more opportunities to contribute to a great cause.

We are proud to be part of a community of gamers that is diverse, and passionate towards various causes.  We’d love to hear from you about the causes you care about and how we can support them. Visit #GoGreenWithRazer and tell us what other green initiatives you’d like us to work on, you have a voice, and your voice is welcomed at Razer.

In the words of Jane Goodall, "You cannot get through a single day without having an impact on the world around you. What you do makes a difference, and you have to decide what kind of difference you want to make."

We, gamers, love a good challenge and right now Mother Earth needs us in her corner. So, what will you do today to make a difference?”
