Tropical White Christmas
There is a reason why Christmas is called the most wonderful time of the year. It is the season that gives us an opportunity to pause and reflect. No matter where you are in the world, the holiday season will have you dreaming of a place where you want to spend some quality time alone, or with your family and besties.
An indulgent tropical white Christmas is what I’m dreaming of. There’s one spot I want to be with my loved ones: Boracay island in southern Philippines.
Of all the beaches in the world I’ve been to (and I’ve travelled to some amazing ones), Boracay never fails to tug at my heartstrings.
Boracay put a spell on me the first time I set foot on it more than 20 years ago. The same sights and sounds keep me coming back every time I have a chance – the serenity that engulfs me as I leave footprints on the powder-fine sand, the mesmerising sunset inducing an explosion of colours as I watch it slowly fade on the horizon, the gentle breeze blowing on my face as I gaze at the blue sea, the gleeful sound of people frolicking on Boracay’s famed white sand beach. Every visit I make is always a heartening experience. This gorgeous paradise hasn’t lost its charm and has been consistently voted one of the best island beaches in the world.
So if you’re not a winter person like me, I would jump at the chance of spending a white Christmas with a touch of gold, blue and green at The Auhana Boracay.
A frolicking white sand Christmas at The Auhana starts the moment you set foot on its pristine white sand beach. Located on the island’s Station 3, it has the longest beachfront on Boracay island and you’re almost guaranteed privacy and exclusivity. The sprawling seven-hectare hotel resort is all dressed up in festive red and green in harmony with nature’s golden sunset, turquoise ocean against the backdrop of blue-and-white skies.
A fambam (short for family bonding and moments) is a great reason to get the family together for a few uninterrupted days of bonding time. Of course, family isn’t strictly biological. It also refers to those with whom you’re particularly close – your chosen family – like your best friends and work buddies.
It’s pure bliss from sunrise to sunset with the cool weather this time year. A destination resort in itself, The Auhana features facilities and amenities that cater to folks of all ages. There are three themed restaurants, a bar and lobby lounge that offer tasty festive menus, three swimming pools, outdoor spots to view the gorgeous sunset or simply marvel at the ocean vista, a spa, a salon, a gym, mini theatre, gaming room, a chapel, a Kids Club and a Kids Courtyard to keep the young ones busy.
Auhana (pronounced O-ha-na) is Polynesian for family. I could picture my son, nephews and nieces happily hanging out by the infinity pool or the sunset deck snapping selfies and goofing around. It’s the perfect place to create new memories before the kids leave the nest. And for your own peace of mind, The Auhana is gated to ensure that only guests and staff members have access to the resort.
There’s also an abundance of third-party operators nearby that offer fun activities for everyone. Take your pick: water skiing, kite flying, sailing, boating and island hopping. How about frisbee or volleyball? Anyone up for building a Christmas tree sandcastle?
Sample some native flavour by mingling with the locals. Hop on Auhana’s van and head out to nearby haunts, where the festivities continue until the crack of dawn.
When you’re done with all the partying, lay your head in one of the resort’s 500 luxury suites and villas, most of which come with a private balcony overlooking the stunning ocean. (All rooms and common areas are non-smoking. There are designated smoking areas around the resort).
The tables in all its three restaurants and bar – all designed for gathering family and friends to spread lots of Yuletide cheer – are set to serve traditional Christmas treats and a smorgasbord of delightful eats to feast on. There’s a dipping pool at The Porch to chill (best spot to watch the sunset with a cocktail in hand). Or you may wish to start your Christmas countdown early by the pool bar, or in one of the function rooms.
On the big day itself, gather around the giant Christmas tree in the lobby and unwrap presents while carols continue to lift the festive mood. In case you’ve forgotten a gift or two, you’ll find something special at the Bora luxe boutique just a few steps from the tree.
The Chapel of All Blessed is open to those who wish to give thanks for all the blessings they’ve received and hoping for more cheers in the coming year.
That fuzzy feeling of spending a white Christmas with my loved ones to rekindle bonds and make new memories is priceless. The best of all gifts around any Christmas tree is the presence of a happy family wrapped in each other’s arms.
